I never saw INXS with Michael Hutchence. I think that might have been a good thing as they now have a new lead singer, JD
Fortune. I had nothing in terms of live performance to compare him to and I think that is fair as certainly INXS is not trying
to re-create the past or even attempt to duplicate the magic they had with Hutchence; they are looking to the future while
honoring the past.
My expectations were to hear a few of my favorite songs and I hoped that JD would be able to hold his own.
I was blown away by JD Fortune but even more so by how well the band sounds in light of only being a couple of weeks since
the start of tour. I was really impressed; and I was skeptical. Yes, I knew JD would bring on the sexy but I wasn't sure
about his ability to command an entire concert.
The band played tight. It was one song after another with no lag in between. I was on my feet the entire night and got
lost in the groove. They played some of their best: Original Sin, Never Tear us Apart, Don't Change (my fave), Kick, Suicide
Blond, Afterglow, Pretty Vegas, and more. I was disappointed only not to hear The One Thing. That song really sets a mood.
JD is a star in the making for certain. He has the ability that not all leads have (Dave Matthews comes to mind as lacking
this) - and that is the ability to connect with audience, rope you in and keep you interested. Fortune does this with confidence
well, arrogance, which is exactly what you want to see in a lead singer.
The band seemed to be having as great time as the audience. It was a great night with a great mood. It left you feeling
hopeful for what's to come. INXS will continue touring and according to a closing comment from Fortune, will be back in the
Bay Area in the summer. I for one, will be there.
